The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at
the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro is seeking a Research Operations Manager
for their NMR facility, which includes 500 MHz JEOL and 300 MHz Bruker
instruments. In addition to upkeep, training, and supervision of
instruments, the Manager will work with faculty, postdocs, and students
(BA, BS, MS and Ph.D.) on the design and development of experiments and
interpretation of results for research and teaching. The minimum
requirements for this position are an MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry or
related discipline and 3-5 years NMR experience. The application

Job Description
Duties will include but not be limited to:
1. Laboratory Management
Supervise and direct day-to-day activities in the NMR facility.
This includes:
(a) Maintaining the NMR facility with instruments operating at a high
performance level, including supervision of cryogen fills, performance
of regular maintenance, tuning, and shimming, supervision of repairs,
etc
(b) In conjunction with faculty, developing instrument use policies,
including policies for scheduling of runs.
(c) Managing NMR laboratory budget.
2. Research Design, Conduction
of Experiments, Data Analysis and Instruction
(a) Train and support faculty, researchers and instructors in use of
the NMRs for research and teaching.
(b) Engage in collaborative research with faculty and assist with the
design, execution and interpretation of NMR projects.
(c) Identify new applications of NMR spectroscopy for faculty research
and teaching projects.
(d) Maintain knowledge of current advances in the application of NMR to
chemical and biochemical research.
e) Participate in submitting collaborative research proposals with
faculty, as well as, submitting instrumentation grants with faculty for
upgrading the NMR facility.
(f) Support appropriate contract projects from regional scientific
businesses or educational institutions.
3. Communication
(a) Ability to work on a team.
(b) Convey information verbally and in written form
(c) Adhere to reporting requirements for research projects and
contribute to the writing of publications and reports.
Minimum Requirements:
MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline with career
emphasis on NMR with 3-5 years of experience in NMR spectroscopy.
NMR expertise in sophisticated multidimensional experiments, including
small molecule and biomolecule applications, for structural and
mechanistic investigations.
Expertise in programming pulse sequences for specialty experiments.
