NMR MANAGER AT SHERBROOKE UNIVERSITY (CANADA)

 

The Department of Chemistry at the Université de Sherbrooke, located in Québec, Canada, is looking to fill a NMR manager position. The instrumental facility is constituted of three NMR spectrometers: liquid 300 MHz and 400 MHz instruments and a solid-state (SS) 400 MHz wide bore dedicated to materials analysis. A 600 MHz NMR (cryo probe), located in another campus (15 km), will be partially under the responsibility of the selected candidate. The NMR facility operates as a platform answering the needs of all the Sherbrooke community. The platform is mostly used by the members of the chemistry and pharmacology departments, but members from various science and engineering departments are also regular users.

The selected NMR manager will be in charge of:

a.  training students at all level (BSc, MSc, PhD, postdocs) in order for them to acquire a sufficient level of expertise to perform routine NMR experiments

b. participating to research projects in order to advise and support users perform advanced NMR experiments, in particular for SS-NMR

c. maintaining all instruments in the platform

d. overseeing the administrative and financial aspects of the platform

e. guiding and advising for platform development

f.  promoting the platform to external users and performing external service analyses

g. developing core-curriculum teaching material and participating and assisting to the teaching of NMR spectroscopy to undergraduate and graduate students. Note that this position is not a teaching one, and the candidate is expected to intervene within existing classes only occasionally.

The candidate should hold a PhD with expertise in NMR. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency with the use of commercial NMR instruments and with SS NMR. The candidate should be keenly aware of recent NMR techniques, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.  The candidate should demonstrate a capacity to participate to a large number of research projects, spanning from protein to inorganic materials characterization.  Knowledge of French is not compulsory, but the candidate will be expected to acquire sufficient proficiency in French over the first two years to communicate orally with platform users.
